About the course

If your family member cannot speak any English, then this course in EAL is perfect for them. This course will teach them how to speak and write the English alphabet and simple words. They will also learn greetings and survival English for daily activities in Australia.

By the end of this course, they will be able to introduce themself, express feelings and buy products from a shop in English. They will also be able to read and recognise basic signs.

If you're an eligible Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) client, you can access unlimited hours of English classes until you reach a vocational level of English without paying course fees. You can apply, even if you have enrolled in the AMEP before and have been living in Australia for many years.

Course Content


  • Full time: 6 months (4 days a week 9:30 am to 3pm)
  • Part time: options available

You can study

  • in the classroom or online
  • daytime or evening classes
  • on Saturdays
  • in general English or special focus classes

Course structure:

  • 1 core unit 
  • 3 core speaking and listening units 
  • 2 core reading and writing units 
  • 2 numeracy units 

Prerequisites


You may be eligible for the AMEP if you are a permanent resident of Australia or you hold an eligible temporary visa. For a full list of eligible temporary visas, please visit the Australian Department of Home Affairs - Visas page.  

If you arrived in Australia after 1 October 2020, you must meet the following time frames from the date of your visa commencement or arrival in Australia to remain eligible:

  • register with an AMEP service provider within six months (or 12 months if you are under 18 years of age when you arrived in Australia)
  • commence your tuition within 12 months
  • complete your tuition within five years

All learners are to undergo an Initial Assessment (IA) conducted by qualified assessors from BHI/CAE prior to being accepted into the program.
