About the course

Our design course aims to develop you to be adaptable and resilient to a rapidly evolving design industry.

This course will provide you with digital skills, business skills and design knowledge. You'll explore emerging technologies whilst being equipped with the skills to be resilient to the challenges of the global design industry.  You will undertake immersive industry practices through collaborative projects and you'll study a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) subject in the final year, which will provide further opportunities to apply and develop your skills and industry awareness.

You will:

  • develop skills in design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
  • learn to use 3D software to design
  • develop communication skills by responding to complex design briefs, undertaking design projects, implementing design solutions and managing them to completion
  • learn sophisticated print and digital media skills, including advertising and promotion, art direction, branding, corporate identity, instructional design, typography, packaging, signage, web design and sustainable practice
  • undertake a workplace internship

Entry Requirements


Applicants with higher education study

Applicants with higher education are those who have completed some or all of a higher education course as their highest level of study since leaving secondary education. This includes study undertaken by applicants at either non-university higher education providers or university some time ago or recently, such as applicants seeking to transfer to Box Hill Institute from another education provider or applicants changing to a different course at Box Hill Institute.

Applicants with higher education study will be required to attend an interview with a folio. Applicants may receive subject credit on the basis of higher education studies.

Interview: applicants will be asked a series of questions relating to their suitability for the course. Applicants are expected to demonstrate a clear understanding and aptitude for the course.

Folio requirements: applicants are required to present a portfolio of 8 electronic images. Applicants can present a folio that demonstrates creativity, artwork, fashion illustrations and concept development. 

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study

Applicants with VET study are those who have completed some or all of a VET course as their highest level of study since leaving secondary education.  This includes study at a public TAFE or other VET provider and applicants who have other qualifications such as Year 10 or Year 12 secondary school certificate. If you have completed an Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design or associate degree, you are eligible for advanced standing for up to 18 months.Applicants with VET study will be required to attend an interview with a folio. Applicants may receive subject credit on the basis of your diploma studies.

Interview – applicants will be asked a series of questions relating to their suitability for the course.  Applicants are expected to demonstrate a clear understanding and aptitude for this course.

Folio requirements – applicants are required to present a portfolio of 8 electronic images.. Applicants can present a folio which demonstrates creativity, artwork, fashion illustrations and concept development. 

Applicants with work and life experience

Applicants with work and life experience have left secondary education more than two years ago (i.e. applicants who are not classified as recent secondary education applicants) and have not undertaken VET or higher education study since then.

‘Experience’ could include a combination of factors sufficient to demonstrate readiness for higher education.  This includes mature age entry, professional experience, community involvement or work experience.  Applicants may have undertaken non-formal programs that have helped them to prepare for tertiary education or are relevant to the proposed higher education field of study.

Applicants with work and life experience will be required to attend an interview with a folio.

Applicants with recent secondary education are those whose admission is based primarily on completion of Year 12 undertaken at school, TAFE or other VET or higher education provider (this includes both Australian or overseas equivalent) that was completed (or will be) in the current year or within the previous two years.

Year 12 Applicants must have successfully completed VCE (or equivalent) with a study score of at least 20 in English. Additional consideration will be given for achievement for applicants who have completed at least one of the following VCE subjects: Design and Technology, Studio Arts, Visual Communication and Design.

Applicants with recent secondary education will be required to attend an interview with a folio.

    This subject provides an introduction to the creative design process. Students will learn the strategies, processes, techniques, and design methodologies required to be an adaptive, multidisciplinary designer.

    Approaches to the study of design in this unit will equip students with a range of conceptual viewpoints using visual research techniques. The elements and principles of design and design thinking concepts will be explored.

    Students will produce a creative folio in response to a design brief. This approach is intended to encourage individuals to start to construct a personally meaningful overview of design, and begin to form knowledge of the creative process through research and interaction.

Key topics include strategic event planning, operational and creative elements, budgets, risk management, event marketing, sponsorship and fundraising, and event evaluation.  This will culminate in a major project that will require students to work collaboratively to plan, execute and critically evaluate a special event.

     Wicked Design creates a journey towards innovative ways of making and thinking through the design process. This unit will share new insights towards collaborative practice, research, and prototyping. It will encourage the student to continuously iterate and reflect to establish deeper insights and knowledge towards the cultural and/or social significance of wicked problems.  

    This subject will assist students to develop content that grabs people's attention and gain visibility online. Students apply their research and creative making skills to develop a series of digital artefacts by crafting quality online content, including audio/podcasts, videos, and eye-catching infographics in response to a real-world client brief.

    In this subject, students will investigate 21st century design industry business models and their diverse structures, systems, processes and operations.     Design Lab is an explorative multidisciplinary unit that pursues new ways of thinking through the application of the double diamond method.     The focus of this subject is on developing students’ knowledge and skills to be able to build, manage, and grow brands. The unit builds the theoretical foundations that are needed to understand brands, brand management, and market and user behaviour research methods to establish the needs and desires of a brand audience. This will be undertaken by investigating key aspects of brand management, brand portfolio, brand strategy, and branding practice such as the measurement of brand performance and brand equity. Through case studies students will learn to manage brand-related issues.

    Students will plan and apply skills to develop and manage brands, explore the application of semiotics, and identify appropriate design to create projects of meaning and value. Students will further their design skills through the creation of a brand persona and visual language for a live client brief.

    This subject builds on DES218 Design Business Operations and will investigate the professional role of the 21st century designer, the diverse skills required to form one’s own creative practice, forming knowledge and insights towards the role of a design entrepreneur. Students will also investigate the methods used to craft a communication strategy to position themselves in the industry. Students will create a personal, innovative, communication strategy, including brand and promotional assets to launch themselves into the design industry. Studio workflow systems, client relationships, ethics and legally binding contracts will also be explored.

    This subject will examine the concept of digital commerce, its presence within the global design industry and the range of innovative business models it has triggered. Industry and market characteristics associated with the Digital Commerce sector are identified and evaluated to discern potential opportunities for existing enterprises as well as startups.  Students will investigate and participate in the process of creating a website for a small to medium-sized fashion brand that will involve its design, proto-type construction, testing and refinement (from inception to launch).  The customer journey, user experience and website functionality will be explored, evaluated, and selected as criteria to evaluate the projected performance of the website in terms of it achieving the purpose and pre-determined, key metrics.

    This subject will cover entrepreneurship, innovation, and business startup management principles. The student will apply various analytical frameworks, concepts and models that are required to maximise the success and sustainability of a new business.  Students will examine case studies, formulate possible solutions, identify opportunities and test ideas through the construct of entrepreneurial frameworks.  Students will devise an individual project from their learnings that will be pitched to an industry panel for review.

    Students will respond to complicated and complex design issues in ways that are sustainable, critical, and change oriented, to make a positive change through their critical design thinking skills.  Applying knowledge gained, students will create digital artefacts in response to identified cultural, social, and sustainability challenges.
