Are you looking to start or enhance your career in pharmacy support in a hospital setting? Then our hospital and health pharmacy services course is for you.

If you are currently employed as a hospital pharmacy technician you can commence Certificate lll in Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support as an off-campus student, via online learning. During this course, you’ll develop your knowledge and skills in:

  • dispensing of prescriptions
  • managing pharmaceutical stock
  • anatomy and medical terminology

This fully online course is supported by a team of dedicated trainers who are available to support your learning via Student Web (our online learning platform) and Microsoft Teams. 

This comprehensive pharmacy technician course offers you two distinct delivery modes tailored to your preferences and lifestyle:

1. Industry (Traineeship - only available for Melbourne based students)

For those seeking flexibility, our industry focused course is fully online. You'll receive dedicated support from a knowledgeable trainer available through our Student Web platform and Microsoft Teams. Additionally, your trainer will make at least four workplace visits, scheduled in collaboration with you and your employer, to assess your progress and provide guidance.  

2. Workplace Based (Employed)

Designed for those already working in the hospital pharmacy industry, our workplace based course is also fully online. You'll benefit from the support of a dedicated trainer via our Student Web platform and Microsoft Teams. Melbourne based students will enjoy workplace visits from your trainer to assess your performance and provide valuable insights. Interstate and regional students will have access to your trainer via video conferencing. 

Work Placement Requirements

To obtain your Certificate III in Hospital Health Service Pharmacy Support, you must complete the requisite hours of work placement in a hospital pharmacy. 

  • Workplace Based (Employed) and Industry (Traineeship): fulfil at least 240 hours of work placement within the hospital pharmacy where you are employed. This experience is crucial to your workplace assessments and learning.

Entry Requirements


You must be employed for a minimum of 13 hours per week within a hospital pharmacy.

It is highly recommended that you:

  • have completed Year 10 (or equivalent) or are of mature age
  • have basic English skills (written and verbal communication)
  • have access to a computer/tablet device with internet, a camera and a microphone

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW - to assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment. A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Pathways & Accreditation


Successful completion enables you to apply for entry into the Certificate IV in Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support.

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 3

Course Structure


Completion of 13 core units of competency.

This fully online course is supported by a dedicated full time teacher who is available to support your learning via Student Web (our learning management system) and Microsoft Teams an interactive platform where you can communicate with your teacher live and or via video conference.

You must also complete 240 hours of work in a hospital pharmacy department during the course of your enrolment.
