About the course

If you'd like to become a qualified early childhood educator, our early childhood education and care course will allow you to develop the skills and knowledge to successfully work in a range of early childhood settings.

In this course, you’ll study:

  • the principles and practices of early childhood pedagogy
  • child development
  • health and well being
  • working in partnerships with families
  • legal and regulatory compliance
  • managing teams and care environments

You'll also learn how to design and implement educational programs that support developmental outcomes for children. Enhance your skills and confidence in classes with experienced and supportive trainers, in practical children’s services simulation rooms and during extensive industry work placement.

Intake Dates & Course Length


Part time/on campus: 19 months (classes Thursday & Friday 9.30AM - 3PM plus placement in a regulated childhood education service 2 days per week)

Off campus/traineeship: 13 - 18 months (via MS Teams - Tuesday and Thursday 6PM - 8PM).  You will also need to attend Elgar campus for a session on the first Saturday of each term (9.30AM - 3PM) to provide an overview of the content to be delivered within the term. To be eligible for part time study you must be employed a minimum of 2 days (15 hours) per week in a regulated education and care service.

This is a blended delivery course which will include a combination of online, remote and face to face delivery. Blended learning can involve a range of online programs and resources including StudentWeb, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Skype, specific industry platforms, pre-recorded sessions, assigned reading, tutorials, discussion boards, and online activities. Blended learning also involves face-to-face attendance at classes or practical placements.

Entry Requirements


You must:

  • hold CHC30113/CHC30121 Certificate III Early Childhood Education and Care (you will need to provide a certified copy of your transcript and qualification)
  • have a current Working With Children Check (required prior to commencement of work placement and for future employment in this field)
  • have achieved the required scores in a Core Skills Diagnostic test
  • have completed a Pre-Training Review 
  • be physically fit, enjoy being with children, have patience, understanding, energy, adaptability and a willingness to take responsibility
  • have a good level of digital literacy and effective time management skills

You may be required to provide a National Police Check (with no disclosable outcomes) to be able to participate in work placement and to apply for future employment opportunities.

Off campus/traineeship students must be employed in a registered childhood education and care service for a minimum of 2 days (15 hours) per week to be eligible for this delivery mode (evidence of employment is required as part of enrolment process)

Traineeship applicants must have also be registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre and have a training contract with an employer.

COVID 19 update: As of Monday 18 July 2022, students no longer need to be vaccinated to attend Box Hill campuses and will no longer be required to show evidence of their vaccination status. Students on placement/in the workplace must continue to adhere to the vaccination mandate that applies to their sector/place of employment.

Please note: Students that have a Certificate III early childhood qualification that pre-dates the pre-requisite qualification for course entry can undertake a RPL or RAP (Recognition Assessment Pathway) process to up skill to CHC30121 in order to meet the entry requirements for Diploma. PRE-TRAINING REVIEW - to assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment. A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Course Structure


In order to meet the requirements of this course, you must complete 15 units of competency and provide evidence of a minimum of 280 hours of work placement in a registered education and care service

Part time/classroom based students - to be assessed as competent in this qualification you are required to undertake a minimum of 280 hours of supervised work placement in a registered education and care service over the duration of the course, for example, long day care service, preschool, kindergarten or an out-of-hours school care program.

Off campus/trainee students - placement hours will be accrued from your employment hours in a registered education and care service

During the work placement component, students will receive work place assessment visits by a Box Hill Institute trainer and assessor. Evidence provided by a workplace supervisor will also contribute to assessment of your ability to work at this level.
